White friends: When was the last time you talked about racism with somebody who made racist remarks?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How did the conversation go?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did your remarks make a difference?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are many times I wish I’d spoken up, and many other times I did speak up and wish I’d done so in a different way.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One example: When my friends in a competitive academic summer program decided that a member of our class “only got in because she was black.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another: When my cab driver made a gross racist comment before he dropped me off at my Bed Stuy apartment.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In both cases, I didn’t know what to say. I felt awkward. And this is always a terrible reason to stay silent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve been following Ijeoma Oluo's writing for several years now, and if you’re looking to educate yourself on speaking about race, she is a must-read. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her book “So You Want to Talk about Race” came out last year, and I still refer back to it when I want to speak up against systemic racism and need strategies to help me make my point.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Highly recommended. Ever scared of saying the one thing you really want? * Even though I decided years ago that I wanted to be a writer, I would rarely tell people that. * Instead, I’d say something like, “I’m a strategy consultant, and I write on the side.” Or, “I started a blog on feminism,” or maybe, “I run a small business that helps entrepreneurial women.” * Choosing not to talk about what I wanted to be recognized for doing was a way of playing it safe. It hid how vulnerable I felt vocalizing what I really wanted. * Naturally, a lot of people I know see me in the way I initially presented myself: a strategy consultant, freelancer, online course creator… but not necessarily a writer. * When I re-created my personal site at the suggestion of my coach @thelifestyleedit, I finally decided to put WRITER loud and clear on very first page. These paint splotches are about a messy as my 2018 was -- and also, I hope, as beautiful. * 2018 was one of my more intense years to date. High highs and low lows. I got married. I launched my course and it did better than expected. I relaunched my course and it did worse than expected. I dealt with my first client non-payment issue and lost many thousands of dollars. I started public speaking. I was energetic and full of optimism. I was depressed and full of pessimism.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The only constant has been my dedication to building the life I want -- and trying, in the midst of it all, to appreciate the present.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ End-of-year hugs to all of you! ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📸: @riflepaperco

I think a large part of finding fulfillment as a business owner is building a business that works for YOU. * Not for your mentors or advisors or other founders who seem successful, but for you. * Maybe that means you want to take evenings off, or to take afternoon naps, or to book all your meetings in a single day of the week, or be able to pocket time to write fiction or learn how to scuba dive. * After spending two weeks in Thailand (where I took the pic above!), my husband and I realized we wanted to travel more. The idea of structuring my business to allow for a digital nomad phase or more leisure travel really excited me. It motivated me to get past burnout and rekindle that spark that led me to pursue this crazy lifestyle in the first place. * And you? If you were to start a business to support a lifestyle you wanted, what would be the key criteria?

What risk have you taken that you’re proudest of? * While I’ve been very open to risk in my career (moved to Berlin after college, quit two jobs without backup plans, started my own business), in other ways, I’m very risk-averse. * Though I’ve hopped on the roller coaster of living abroad and trying my hand at entrepreneurship, try to get me on an actual roller coaster (like, at an amusement park), and you’ll see… I’m not such a risk-taker when it comes to my physical well-being! In fact, I get pretty stubborn and inflexible about saying no. * Occasionally, though, I’m in a place where I can suspend my fear and basically say yes to everything. This year, that place was Thailand (where I am in the photo), where I went on my honeymoon in November. 🇹🇭 I rode on the makeshift back of a pickup truck on the highway for over an hour to go see elephants. I tried really spicy food, even though pickiness is one of my trademarks. I went snorkeling even after being told there were stinging sea urchins in the water. And I kayaked through very narrow caves and essentially had a panic attack… but kept going. * I wasn’t always comfortable, but looking back, I’m proud of myself for throwing caution to the wind and letting myself experience many new things. (And equally grateful for all the Thai massages available to help me relax 😂.)
Seven-step journaling exercise rooted in feminist practice:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Where are you spending the most unpaid emotional labor (e.g. spending time/energy making other people feel better, even if you're not responsible for them)?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Where can you be proud of your emotional labor? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ But also, where can it stop?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Who has benefited from your unpaid emotional labor?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5️⃣ Have you benefited an equal amount from those same people's generosity? Why or why not?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 6️⃣ What do you stand to gain or lose from setting boundaries around the emotional energy you spend on others?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 7️⃣ Having reflected on these questions, what will you do differently tomorrow?
